Why I Find My Me Time in Unusual Places: A Mom's Guide to Self-Care on the Go

As a mom, finding time for myself often feels like searching for a needle in a haystack. With kids constantly vying for my attention, carving out even a few moments for self-care can seem impossible. However, I’ve discovered that the best breaks can be found in unexpected places. From parked cars to indulgent baths, I've embraced “me time” in unconventional ways. Let me share some of my favorite spots and strategies that allow me to recharge while juggling motherhood.

The Parked Car Sanctuary

Who would have thought that sitting in a parked car could become a cherished retreat? When my kids fall asleep during car rides and I find myself parked in the driveway or at a local park, I take full advantage of that quiet moment.

In these tranquil moments, I might listen to a favorite podcast, scroll through my phone or simply enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee. The car transforms into my own private sanctuary where I can reflect or just breathe. This quick escape only takes five to ten minutes and doesn’t require extensive planning, making it a go-to solution for busy days. If the kids are with me and have fallen asleep I have been know to take a much needed nap myself in my driveaway. You do wat you gotta do right?

Long Bath Therapy

One of my all-time favorite rituals is soaking in a long bath. As a busy mom, bath time often turns into a race, but I’ve learned to shift that mindset. By preparing my bath with soothing scents and calming music, I create a mini-spa experience right at home.

Filling the tub with warm water, bubble bath, and sometimes even lighting a candle transforms it into a refuge from daily chaos. During my bath, I consciously disconnect for as long as it lasts. This simple act of self-care serves as a reminder that taking a moment for ourselves doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated; it can be delightful and restorative right at home.

My husband and even the older kids are really great about watching the younger ones when "mommy marinades" and because it's a private space I'm less likely to be interrupted so I can enjoy a book or just chill with a face mask on or the occasional glass of wine..

Grocery Store Strolls

It may sound odd, but grocery shopping often feels like a golden opportunity for "me time." Even in a store , I enjoy the chance to roam, savoring this rare moment of kid free time.

In the grocery store when time allows, I take leisure strolls down the aisles, allowing myself to pick out new items without feeling rushed. It’s a chance to browse at my own pace and I often discover new products or fresh recipe ideas. Admittedly this can be an expensive way to relax (I'm looking at you Target) but I enjoy it nonetheless.

The Importance of Finding Self-Care Time

Many moms feel guilty for needing a break. Society often tells us that motherhood is a full-time job and that we should devote ourselves entirely to our children. However, self-care is not selfish; it is essential. Research indicates that setting aside even just 30 minutes for self-care can significantly improve mood and stress levels.

Recognizing that those little moments to recharge—whether in a calm car, a soothing bath, or during grocery trips—are crucial has been life-changing. Prioritizing our needs, even if it’s in short bursts, helps us become better moms.

So if you can't make it to a night out or take a larger chunk of time to yourself DO NOT feel guilty about carving me time out wherever and whenever you can.

Making It Work

Here are a couple of actionable tips to help ensure you carve out that essential “me time”:

  1. Embrace the Moments: Don’t wait for a grand getaway. Look for small pockets of time throughout your day. Whether that time appears while waiting for an appointment or during school drop-off, seize it!

  2. Get Creative with Kid Time: Reclaim nap times. Instead of tackling chores, use that time to recharge. Consider reading a few chapters of a book or enjoying a short meditation session.

  3. Communicate with Your Partner: Talk to your partner about your need for personal time. Scheduling these moments together fosters understanding and makes it easier to find time for yourself.

  4. Set Boundaries: Sometimes, it’s perfectly okay to close the bathroom door or linger in the car. Teach your kids that it’s normal and healthy to have boundaries around personal time.

Embracing Your Unique Me Time

Finding “me time” as a mom isn't always easy, but it doesn't have to be complicated. It can be found in the little moments—even in unusual places. By being creative and prioritizing self-care even within a busy lifestyle, I’ve recognized just how vital investing in myself can be.

Whether it’s hanging out in a parked car while my kids snooze, indulging in a long bath, or enjoying a private grocery store stroll, I am committed to nurturing my spirit. A happy mom contributes to a happy home, so take the time to find your own sanctuaries and celebrate the unique ways you can indulge in well-deserved “me time.”
