Fans of distinctive architecture and interior design will want to experience The Old Hyde Park Home Tour taking place on Saturday, December 7, 10am-1pm. Several charming homes in the iconic Hyde Park neighborhood will be available to explore, with sips, snacks and music plus other surprises along the way. Dating to the 1880s, Hyde Park's development began when railroad magnate Henry Plant built a bridge over the Hillsborough River providing a link to downtown. Plant built his Tampa Bay Hotel north of what was to become Hyde Park and citrus growers James Watrous and William Morrison built the first houses. Hyde Park's Morrison Grove subdivision is where many of the state's loveliest and most eclectic mix of historic homes  -  Georgian and classical mansions, Prairie, half-timber houses and Craftsman bungalows - can be found. The neighborhood's historic district was designated in the 1980s, preserving its character amid modernization.  The 2023 Tour was featured in the Tampa Bay Times.

Carren Rieger Friess, President of Hyde Park Preservation,  expressed her excitement, stating, 'We’re thrilled to announce that the Home Tour is back! This year’s event will showcase a diverse array of period house architectural styles. The funds raised will be instrumental in restoring the tree canopy, which suffered significant losses of distinctive old trees and historic signage due to the storms of 2024."

HPPI is also pleased to announce that community oriented businesses are sponsoring the tour: Tampa General Hospital and ZooTampa at Lowry Park. These sponsors are part of the fabric of the Tampa community, one in the health care of our residents and the other in conservation of animals. Their support of our neighborhood association is instrumental in our ability to preserve and beautify this special historic district that is a treasured part of Tampa.

Several unique and inspired homes join the tour this year. One of the many highlights is the “Lickerman House” built in 1912 by James and Dora  Bryan. It is a beautifully restored classic Victorian style home with many Bungalow Craftsman features. The home features a rare large 42 inch front door, copper and tin ceilings, box beams, several fireplaces, a stunning kitchen with Brazilian Granite counters, decorative tile work done by a St. Pete artisan and stylish custom shelving in the library. The renovation was accomplished to exacting standards with an eye towards preserving and restoring architectural details in a historically correct fashion. Adding to the excitement and seamlessly combining the old and the new is a gorgeous home on South Oregon designed by acclaimed and in-demand decorator Tate Casper of Oxford Design. Several of the historic homes have gracious porches and inspired backyards that will be decorated to celebrate the holidays and filled with performers from Gasparilla Music Festival and treats from our supportive sponsors.

The Hyde Park Home Tour continues a long series of successful home tours that have invited the community into one of Tampa’s most charming and historic neighborhoods over the years. The planning committee, led by co-chairs Sarah Tombaugh and Molly Hendricks, are hard at work attending to all the details, including partnering with local restaurants, for refreshments and live entertainment at the homes and along the tour route.
